Housing Works for Colorado concludes 2008 Petition Drive

Dear Friends,
It has been an exciting year and an exciting adventure to create an issue committee and start a campaign.  Thank you for your support for the Colorado Housing Investment Fund Initiative!

As you can imagine, before undertaking this endeavor we gave considerable thought to our abilities, the timing, the funding and our potential for success.  We made the bold and logical decision to pursue the 2008 ballot.  And then, as happens in life, many things changed.  We had hoped to overcome some of the delays and setbacks we faced in simply getting a ballot title approved and petition drive started.  However, we are forced to conclude the days are too few and we don’t have enough resources to overcome the short timeframe for delivering enough valid signatures by August 4. Therefore, we are halting our 2008 petition drive and working to garner resources and prepare for a future campaign.

We do not come to this decision lightly.  We believe what we have learned and the investments we have made this year will help make us successful in the future, and we believe we should redirect our energy and resources toward building future success.

We share in your disappointment that the Colorado Housing Investment Fund will not be on the 2008 ballot.  It truly is an exciting election and we wish could have capitalized on it rather than being crowded out of it.  And like many of you, we were anxious to stop talking about this effective and proven tool of a housing investment fund and wanted to see it in action.  However, there is more work to be done.

Let’s also celebrate how far many organizations have come in understanding their role in advocacy and exercising it.  Let’s cheer on everyone who did something new and something they had never done before to get this petition drive to happen.  Let’s learn from decisions which had to be made in a moment and plan ahead to address them.

In practical matters, those of you who are petitioning can stop and turn those signatures into the campaign. We want to preserve the petitions for future reference as they represent one of the many assets we have gathered in 2008.  Please send your petition to the Housing Works for Colorado post office box (the address is on your petition) at your earliest convenience or drop off to the CHIF office.

In closing, please accept our sincere thanks for your contributions to our efforts.
Sincerely,
